This is my first Blu Ray player and so far I love it. Set up was not too bad, although the instruction booklet is not very helpful – not sure what all the pages are wasted on, but could definitely include more step by step instruction. Wireless connection was easily established – I use a Mac and Airport Extreme, no problem. The picture is beautiful and sound is great. Netflix streaming also worked very nicely – no interruptions and very good picture quality. A few picky points I don’t like – the disc drawer doesn’t seem to close when you gently push on it like most dvd players do (including an old Panasonic dvd player I have). This is not a big deal, but you have to push the remote or the top button. The power button and the disc drawer button are on the top corners of the unit, not on the front. I have another component sitting on top of the player, so that doesn’t work so well. The remote seems pretty easy to use and the buttons are reasonable size (some remotes have tiny little buttons crammed together). The on screen menu is a bit awkward – figuring out how to change the weather panel to my local area was trial and error. Most people probably realize this, but if you’re buying your first blu ray player most (all?) do not come with the necessary HDMI cable, which can cost you quite a bit depending on the quality. Overall this seems like a great unit for the price.

This is my first blu-ray player. I bought it a few days ago because it offers 7.1 analog out. I didn’t really need the wireless capability but since it came with everything it needs for wireless, I was able to take the player out of the box, connect it to my TV and stereo, create a Netflix account on the fly, setup the wireless connection with my home router and begin to watch a movie in about 20 minutes ! This has been the best experience. I never used an online streaming service and never had a Netflix account. Setting up wireless and Netflix was a breeze. I have not used the 7.1 analog yet since I am waiting to connect to my 7.1 amp but even the stereo sound for movies is excellent. The picture quality for both Netflix instant and DVD’s are fantastic. I couldn’t be happier. A very friendly player. You can also view other online content such as Youtube, Picasa web albums, weather etc.

Traded a Panasonic DMP-BD80 for this DMP-BD85 for the wireless features. We loved the DMP-BD80 and this player is equally as good but better since you get the wireless capability and the blu-ray discs load up twice as fast as compared with the DMP-BD80. We are pleased with this player and Panasonic has a great reputation for quality and longevity. Setup of the wireless features was pretty intuitive. Of course, we buy everything possible through Amazon since the service is consistently wonderful.

    Yay!

The BD 85 is a dramatic improvement for me over my BD 35 which I had thought was great already. Crisp picture, incredible sound (even on my home theater in a box), easy setup, easy Netflix, smooth streaming on my broadband (hardwired), fast BD load time, and remote syncs with my Panasonic plasma. Honestly, this is a great machine. Wow!

I recently purchased the LG BD550 Blu-Ray Disc Player and returned it due to disc compatibility issues and a lackluster set of audio output options. Once I set up this new Panasonic player, I was pleasantly surprised to see an improvement in picture quality. I was reluctant to pay the higher price for this unit, but the bump in capabilities are well worth the extra money. The streaming content on this player also work very well (tested out Netflix, Amazon VOD, etc.) and seemed to show a slight improvement in video quality as well. I’m not sure if the more vibrant and realistic colors and increased detail are due to the superior processor on this player, but I was pleasantly surprised to see that better players do in fact produce better picture quality. I also own a Samsung BD-P1500 and 2550 and have used all of these players on the same tv with the same picture settings in place. The picture quality is noticeably better on the Panasonic, though of course it’s not as drastic as the difference between DVD and blu-ray.

In addition to the picture quality, I was able to attain much more impressive sound with the analog audio outputs transmitting lossless audio to my old non-hdmi home theater receiver. Taking advantage of the Panasonic’s 7.1 channel analog outputs (only using 5.1, but it works just fine), the lossless audio can be decoded in the player and sent to the home theater receiver. The only reason I took off a star from the sound quality is because there was a significant audio lag with my setup which consists of an HDMI connection between the TV and blu-ray player for video, and the aforementioned analog outs between the player and the AV receiver for sound. The lag was fixed with an adjustment in the menu that allows for an audio lag compensation to sync it up with the video. It took more than a few attempts to find the proper millisecond setting, which was a bit tedious, but this should only have to be done once. I’m not sure if this was an intrinsic fault of the player, and I’m sure that other players use a similar fix for the problem. I just took off a star since it wasn’t completely flawless.

As far as features and the interface are concerned, everything works pretty well. There have been no Netflix streaming playback issues or disc incompatibilities like those that plagued the Samsung and LG players respectively. I haven’t used the wireless functionality, so I can’t speak to that. Overall this player has not disappointed, but just be warned that all of the features and fiddling with the settings and connections require a bit of experience and patience in order to get the most out of this player. The interface could be a bit more streamlined and user-friendly, but it’s perfect for people who enjoy tinkering and tweaking things to perfection rather than those looking for a simpler plug and play product.

I purchased the Panasonic DMP-BD85K WiFi Enabled Blu-Ray Disc Player out of pure frustration with watching newly released Blu-Ray movies on our Sony BDP-s300. We constantly spent hours trying to update firmware on the Sony, to support new releases of Blu-Ray. This involved going to the computer, searching for the latest firmware upgrade, burning to disc, and running the upgrade procedure on the BDP-s300. Many times even this did not resolve the issue, or no new upgrade was available, which caused us to send movies back to Netflix, unwatched. After the last episode I set out to find a better player, and after some research, found most people were happy with the Panasonic DMP-BD85K. After using it for 2 months now, I like it better each day. We recently received a Netflix new release, that required a firmware upgrade, and it could not have been a better experience. The Panasonic connected (wirelessly)to the net, downloaded the firmware, installed it, and let me know when it was complete. All I have to do was click OK, when it finished, to proceed to watching the movie. This was the first time since we began watching Blu-Ray formatted discs, that there were no moans and sighs when the firmware upgrade began.

As an added bonus, I was able to sell my Roku device and am now using the Panasonic DMP-BD85K to watch Netflix streaming movies. Great product for the price!

I am 54 years old. My TV is 36″ and doesn’t even have a HDMI jack. This unit had provisions for almost any situation, and even a simple setup function for the WiFi. My main reason for this purchase was that I could add on free Netflix Instant movies to my Netflix subscription. I was disappointed in the begining with the setup only to find that the problem was in my router config. Certain routers are not supported here. It would be a good idea to go to Panasonic on line and check yours. With so many new electronics, the “remotes” are designed “irradically”. NOT SO, with this unit. Panasonic actually thought this one out first. I am very pleased with this unit in all respects. I even called customer service once and they had a fast response and courtious service.

When Sony won the HD contest with Toshiba I instantly bought a Sony BD player, no WiFi at that time. After a year and a half it quit. I didn’t want to have it repaired. I then bought a Samsung BD-C6500 as it had builtin WiFi. This feature failed to remember the router code meaning that I had to reprogram it every time I wanted to watch a Netflix movie. It also would not resume playing a DVD if it were shut off part way through the movie. After 2 1/2 months of frustration I contacted Amazon and they were more than understanding. They allowed me to either replace it or return it for a refund. I opted for the return of nearly 100%.

As a replacement, I bought a Panasonic DMP-BD85 that does it all perfectly. After the first simple setup the WiFi streaming works flawlessly, every time. And, if I press Stop part way through the movie and then turn it Off, the next time I turn it ON I get the message asking if I want to resume the movie where I left it. Clicking Yes instantly begins the movie where I left it.

Fan Effing Tastic! Panasonic has it all.

This player has been extensively reviewed, so I will not bother with a detailed account of its capabilities. However I felt duty-bound to give Panasonic credit for another high-value product. The features and performance of this Blu-Ray player at its price point are simply amazing. High points for me:

    >>Analog outputs for full 7.1 channels. I have an older receiver which doesn’t have either HDMI or the new HD audio formats, so this was important to me. The lossless HD audio codecs (DTS HD and Dolby TrueHD)are an obvious improvement over the older Dolby and DTS compression formats, IMO, and made the analog outputs a huge selling feature. Don’t overlook this if you have an older receiver, as Blu-Ray players are not able to stream decoded lossless audio over the optical audio output–the bandwith of that cable won’t support it. As far as I could determine, this Panny is the only Blu-Ray player at this price to include the 7.1 channel analog outputs.

    >>Support for Netflix and Pandora. The Panasonic Internet services are easy to set up and work with. I like the interfaces just fine, although I haven’t seen any other interfaces to compare. Netflix streaming over my wired connection is fast, high quality, and error free.

    >>Loading speed. With fast loading enabled, it seems to me that Blu-Ray discs load just about as fast as DVD’s. I haven’t timed it with a stopwatch or really scrutinized it closely; let’s just say that Blu-Ray discs load fast enough that I haven’t really even thought much about it.

    >>Video quality. Blu-Ray discs of course look fantastic, but the upscaling of regular DVD’s is so good that some of them seem to approach Blu-Ray quality levels. I haven’t found any nits to pick with how this player has handled any material we’ve played yet.

If you look at this player’s Amazon reviews and compute the percentage of 4 and 5 star reviews, it seems better than any competing product. I think these ratings are deserved. Kudos to Panasonic for producing a disc player of this quality for only $200.

I am glad to read all of the reviews but I have not recieved my player yet and here is my story.

I ordered a Panasonic DMP-BD85K Blu Ray Player from Panasonic Direct for the Black Friday price of $137.99( after tax it was $149.00 and some change )the confirmation email said that the estimated shipping date was 11/26/2010 which was the same day( Black Friday )I was ordering it. The email also stated that it would send me a email when the product was shipped and would be sent one to three day shipping by, UPS there were 6 in stock at the time of my order.

One week later, friday 12/03/2010 no email has arrived in my inbox and no product has shown up on my door step. I call the customer service number and wait for 44 minutes on the phone( when I first called there is a automated service that asks if you will take a survey about the phone call after the call is over I answered yes and it said it would call me back in 30 minutes. I got the call back before being answered by the customer service rep so I hung up to see how the call would turn out )when the rep answered I explained my issues and she stated that the shipping department was off on Black friday and the weekend and snowed in on monday. I then asked if that was the reason for the delay in shipping and she said no that there had been many orders on black friday and they may have sold out therefore my order may be on back order in the order it was recieved which could take two to three weeks. I then asked if I would recieve it before Christmas she said she had no idea and that they would be happy to refund my money if I did not want to wait.

This is my first time buying a Panasonic product, the ratings were good on the product, the price was great, I know this is the holiday season so I expect shipping to be slow, however I do expect a business who to capitalize on great sales and good market share to actually have the product available in reality when they sale it and more ambition to resolve my issues then we have your money and you will get your product when you get it attitude. As for how I am going to address this problem, if I don’t get the product by next week I will never buy another Panasonic product ever. If I don’t get it befor Christmas I will spread the word to family and friends and across the nation to any who will listen or read.

I had the same problem as s. Evans. I too ordered from the website on thanksgiving day with expected shipping in 1-3 days. I have called and have been astonished by the rude customer support, I believe they want me to cancel the order and that the incredibly low price was a typo. I believe that they have no intention to live up to the price.

DirectReviews: Note that S. Evans says exactly where the product was ordered from: PANASONIC! Amazon is well-and-good, but one should be able to have faith in the company’s OWN website. I am in the same boat. I ordered on 11/26/2010 and the item still has not shipped. When I called panasonic on 12/3 they informed me that there was a 3-4 week backorder and that it likely wouldn’t ship until January. My CSR was actually quite friendly and helpful. He allowed that the order could be cancelled at any time prior to shipping. Our local Best Buy is selling it for about $20 more than panny charged. If it hasn’t shipped by next week, I will probably go that route.
